Lunar month (Amanta and Purnimanta)
The Hindu month, like Kartika or Shravana. North India ends it on full moon, south and west India on new moon.
Purnimanta (used in most of North India) ends each month on Purnima. Amanta (used in Maharashtra, Gujarat and the south) ends it on Amavasya. So for half of each month the two systems give different month names. Festivals still fall on the same day.
Adhik Maas is an extra month added about every three years to keep the lunar calendar in step with the seasons.
